General information about the school

The Church Conservatoire Opava was founded in the school year 1999 - 2000 as the Church High Organ School. Since the very beginning it has continued and built on the tradition of the Prague Organ School. In the school years 2006 – 2007 the school has been transformed into the Church Conservatoire Opava; with the opportunity of an optional higher education study in the 5th and 6th form.

The Conservatoire offers education in Music with special regard to church music, in the following ways:

  • a four-year study programme completed with final state exam (maturita)
  • a six-year higher academic study completed with final leaving exam (absolutorium)

The conservatoire uses state approved teaching documents. The academic education is based not only on the standard curriculum for conservatoires, but also on the tradition of religious church music with regards to current trends. The key idea of the education is for the students to be able to choose from a variety of professions according to their needs.

Since the beginning of the school one of the key ideas has been for the students to be offered a variety of subjects to study. Besides the main subjects: organ, piano, harpsichord, choir conducting, solo singing, wind and string instruments, composition and conducting, from the 3rd year on there are other subjects related to church music: organ, choir conducting and solo singing. The study includes therefore the second major subject – church music – supported by a set of other specialised subjects (e.g. in the 1st and 2nd year one weekly lesson of Latin and from the 1st to the 6th year one weekly lesson of liturgical music). The conception of the vocational education enables the students to obtain not only a broad general education, including the aforementioned vocational training, but also a deeper specialization in one of the fields of study. Feedback from the school graduates confirms the benefit of providing a wide scope of music as well as general education. Regular performances of students both at school and in public are an obligatory part of the study.

The vocational education includes obtaining a teaching qualification. It is the part of the curriculum in 5th and 6th year and involves selected content from pedagogy, psychology and teaching skills aimed at music. The students obtain practical pedagogical skills by working with a model or by regular sit-ins on classes and teaching children at primary art schools under the professional guidance of a teacher. For this reason the school closely cooperates with local primary art schools and choirs.

The founder of the school is the Czechoslovak province of the female branch of the Order of Teutonic knights. The Order is present in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia. The most talented students may obtain scholarship for further studies or educational stays in the aforementioned countries.

No school fees are paid at the Church Conservatoire Opava. This also applies to students from the Slovak Republic and other EU countries. The conservatoire is open to all denominations. It accepts students of all confessions as well as non-Christians.

Terms of acceptance

The applicant sits an aptitude test that consists of three parts:

  • The first practical part involves examination in the major subject. We recommend the applicants to consult the teacher of the major subject before doing the exam.
  • The aim of the second practical part of the examination is to find out if the applicant has aptitude for music in the terms of intonation (melodic-harmonic feeling, rhythmic feeling and auditory analysis). This part also comprises the exam in piano play.
  • The third part of the examination is a written test, which aims at rudimentary knowledge of music theory. This should be on the level of music education classes of the first cycle at a primary music school.

Accommodation and school meals

Students can are offered premium accommodation in a new hostel in the school building. All rooms have their own sanitary facility, internet connection and TV. The hostel has two well-equipped kitchens and students can have their lunch in a nearby school canteen.

School equipment

The school is based in a newly reconstructed historical building in the city centre. There are three concert halls, where regular concerts are held for the public. They are equipped with new concert instruments. The classrooms are equipped and adjusted to the needs of the individual school subjects (audiovisual classroom, language classroom, computer lab, gymnastics hall etc.) The students also have an opportunity to use the individual classrooms for practising after the irregular lessons.

The school has a well-equipped music library for students, a general library, a score archive and a music recordings library. All students have access to the internet.
